Entering week six of the NFL season, the waiver wire (as expected)
is starting to become a little thin. Bye weeks are now in full swing which will
mean applying greater attention to finding replacements. Finding those players
to cover injuries and the byes will be important to obtain those victories. Let’s
dive into this week’s edition of waiver wire targets.
Quarterbacks:
Kyle Allen (CAR) (10%)
Granted, the Panthers Kyle Allen hasn’t filled
the stat column these past two weeks, he has Carolina rolling in this right direction
winning contests. This week taking travel to Tampa Bay could definitely change
that perspective. Allen has been fairly effective and could find the endzone multiple
times this week. If you are stuck at the position, Allen should show quite well
in week six.
Gardner
Minshew (JAX) (25%)
We can’t say enough about what the
Jaguars Gardner Minshew has done in relief of Nick Foles. Moving this offense
in the right direction while putting up sound fantasy points in the process has
been key. Coming off yet another solid contest, Minshew will be tested verse
the Saints, but should fare well. Tempering the expectations is wise, as the
Jags will face a stout defense in New Orleans. Still if you’re in a pinch,
Minshew could give you enough to get by.
On the Radar:
Case Keenum (WAS) (6%)
Sam Darnold (NYJ) (13%)
Davlin Hodges (PIT) (0%)
Colt McCoy (WAS) (1%)
Running Backs:
With the wire extremely thin at the running back position, the
Redskins Adrian Peterson has new life this week facing off against the lowly
Miami Dolphins. Still available in nearly half of leagues, Peterson should be
given the bulk of the workload without Coach Gruden on the sidelines. The game
plan for the Skins will be quite vanilla with the interim head coach calling
the shots. A better matchup we couldn’t find and Peterson could bring good
returns.
Benny Snell (PIT) (1%)
With news breaking that Jaylen Samuels will be out at least a
month with a knee injury, Benny Snell gets lifted up the ranks and should be
roster on every team. Now being fully entrenched as the Steelers backup, they
will have a solid focus on the run game with now third string quarterback
Davlin Hodges behind center. Workload should increase with each passing week.
Elijhaa
Penny (NYG) (0%)
With news that Wayne Gallman will miss this Thursday Night contest
against the Patriots, third string running back Elijhaa Penny should get first
crack at the workload. While this matchup leaves little to be desired, volume
will be key in potential fantasy production. The Giants have also signed Jon
Hillman off the practice roster in hopes to generate anything on the ground.
Nevertheless, this is a desperation play against the mighty Patriots.
Chase
Edmonds (ARZ) (4%)
Hearing that the Cardinals star running back David Johnson is
dealing with an injury of his own, Chase Edmonds is prime to take on a greater workload
this week against a Falcons defense that can’t stop a cold. The Cards looked
better last week in their play calls and execution, and we could see Arizona
using both backs to help control the clock. Watch the injury report for Johnson
as Edmonds could have a very large role.
On the Radar:
Jon Hillman (NYG) (1%)
Ito Smith (ATL) (15%)
Wide Receivers:
Without the services of the speedy John Ross, the Bengals were
forced to integrate Arden Tate in the lineup, and he played admirably last
week. Facing off against the Baltimore Ravens defense that has seen its share
of struggles in defending the pass this season, Tate isn’t a terrible pickup
and potential play this week. While target share will be the greatest concern,
Tate has the tools to find the endzone in this offense.
Darius Slayton (NYG) (1%)
Byron Pringle (KC) (1%)
The revolving door of receivers on this Chiefs squad continues to
move, Byron Pringle could again have a feature role with Tyreek Hill and Sammy
Watkins still unable to play. Pringle saw a great deal of targets last week in
relief, and should again be leaned upon if Watkins is unable to suit up. Keep
in mind that Patrick Mahomes is dealing with an ankle injury which made him
look human on Sunday Night. With that said, taking a shot on any Kansas City
pass catcher isn’t a terrible thought.
Zay Jones
(OAK) (3%)
With breaking news last night, the Buffalo Bills have traded Zay
Jones to the Oakland Raiders in hopes to provide more help in the pass game.
Jones is a talented player that had the fortitude of being a possession
receiver from back in his college days. Never materializing into anything credible
in Buffalo, we could see something transform in Oakland. Jones should be
planted as the primary slot presence in this offense and should have a role
moving forward. If you can spare the roster space, now is the time to grab
Jones as a wait and see, with great potential.
On the Radar:
Josh Reynolds (LAR) (0%)
Keke Coutee (HOU) (17%)
Preston Williams (MIA) (8%)
Ted Ginn (NO) (7%)
Tight-Ends:
Cameron
Brate (TB) (1%)
As the Bucs OJ Howard continues to be an afterthought in this
offense, Cameron Brate again has some value in the redzone. While volume will
never be on his side, the potential to snag and steal touchdowns from Mike
Evans and Chris Godwin is clearly here. A very risky play each week, Brate has
touchdown upside if you’re stuck at the position.
Geoff Swaim (JAX) (0%)
With news of more injury, the Jaguars lost James O’Shaughnessy to
an ACL and will be lost for the season. With how Gardner Minshew has been able
to spread the ball around the field, the potential for Geoff Swaim to have a
role is real. Swaim lost his role early this offseason but should challenge to
get it back starting with this week. It’s difficult to predict how this will
shake out, but Swaim should slot in as the teams number one tight end this
weekend.

Hunter Henry (LAC) (40%)
Ricky Seals-Jones (CLE) (4%)
Noah Fant (DEN) (13%)
