Closing out week two providing further confirmation that the NFL is unpredictable, we see players off the fantasy radar come to light, while the injury bug rears its ugly head once again. Seeing teams lose starters and other players continue to gain relevance, there is ample opportunity to improve your roster depth in this addition of waiver wire targets. While some use the wire to cover their losses, we at ADF always feel the need to evaluate who we employ in hopes to gain that edge. Happy shopping let’s get to it…

Quarterbacks:
Blake
Bortles (JAX)
Based on pre-draft ADP (Average Draft Position) we at
ADF sang the praises of Blake Bortles to be an absolute steal where his
services could be secured. The Jacksonville Jaguars are a team that should continue
to get better as the weeks move forward, and Bortles will be a big part of
that. Viewing like a different quarterback last week against the Patriots,
Blake looked decisive and on point commanding the huddle with leadership traits
we’ve been waiting to see. If this Blake can become the weekly version of
himself with high consistency, he could turn into a weekly starter. Owned in
29% of leagues, housing Bortles on your bench would be an intelligent move as
the benefits will reign supreme.
Ryan
Fitzpatrick (TB)
While some will suggest that Ryan Fitzpatrick should
be the top quarterback addition this week, our reservations based on history preclude
us from providing that endorsement. It no question that Fitz-magic is playing
out of his mind at the moment, but haven’t we seen this script before? Ryan had
early success with the Bills and the Jets years ago only to have a great drop
off while losing relevance. While we remain skeptical on the overall season
outlook, Fitzpatrick can be trusted this week playing at home against the
Steelers who seem rather dysfunctional at the moment. Owned in 24% of leagues,
Fitzpatrick is a top-end streaming quarterback that could again put up 30
fantasy points.
Andy
Dalton (CIN)
The Cincinnati Bengals over the first two weeks have
shown they’ve improved their inadequacies from last season becoming quite competitive
in the process. While Andy Dalton hasn’t been a dominating producer in his
career, he has put together a solid resume of production that could be justified
to warrant a roster spot. It’s clear that offensive coordinator Bill Lazor has
readopted the notion to force feed their star AJ Green which has resulted in
great productivity and that should continue throughout the season. Owned in
only 27% of leagues, Andy is a sure fire matchup play that could help your
squad gain a few victories in the process.
On the Radar:
Joe Flacco (BAL)
Ryan Tannehill (MIA)
Tyrod Taylor (CLE)
Running Backs:
Austin
Ekeler (LAC)
If you didn’t listen to ADF’s recommendation last week
regarding the Chargers stellar talent Austin Ekeler, we will preach it one last
time as he is quickly becoming a household name. Ekeler is still available in
55% of leagues but that number will surely jump after this week’s waiver
transactions. Philip Rivers has always found great success when the Chargers
employ a receiving option out of the backfield to which that mantra again
proves to be the case. There is a clear role for Austin in this offense on a
weekly basis and will produce great numbers in PPR formats throughout the
season. If you’re lucky enough to see Ekeler on the wire, hit that with top
priority.
Giovani
Bernard (CIN)
With injury news released that Bengals starting
running back Joe Mixon with be stuck in the medical room for the next couple
weeks, Giovani Bernard instantly becomes the next man up to start and control
the workload. Owned in only 29% of leagues, he certainly will be a top addition
this week off the waiver. It’s quite possible most will miss out on securing
the services of the multi-purpose back, so a side-note to those vying for
Bernard, another back on the Bengals also has some appeal. While Giovani is the
top choice, rookie Mark Walton is a player that we at ADF are extremely excited
about and could see a role carved out in Mixon’s absence. Place priority on
Bernard with a watchful eye on Walton.
Matt
Breida (SF)
By now the 49ers running back Matt Breida has
generated enough steam to be housed on a fantasy roster, we were surprised to
see that he is still available in 38% of leagues. It’s probably a long shot that
Breida will be there, but at the random chance that he remains on the wire,
snag him and don’t look back. Kyle Shanahan has suggested he will continue to service
the hot-hand as games dictate, but at this point Matt has literally run away
with the higher percentage of the workload. This is an extremely easy addition if
you happen to be so lucky.
Ito
Smith (ATL)
One player that was on our radar during training camp
was the Atlanta Falcons rookie Ito Smith. Buried on the depth chart to begin
the year obviously sitting behind Freeman and Coleman, Smith is a giant future
play that could find relevance next season if Tevin Coleman decides to take his
talents to another team. With that said Smith will have a role this week and
perhaps next as Devonta Freeman nurses an injury to his knee. Coleman is the
clear number one runner for the Falcons entering this week, but Smith should
see valuable snaps to potentially produce viable numbers. This waiver addition
makes more sense in deeper leagues, but there could be some appeal if you’re
really stuck at running back.
On the Radar:
Nyheim Hines (IND)
Javorius Allen (BAL)
Chris Ivory (BUF)
Mark Walton (CIN)
Corey Clement (PHI)
Wide Receivers:
Keelan
Cole (JAX)
It was difficult to ascertain who would be the
clear-cut number one receiver in Jacksonville entering this season. We absolutely
loved the potential of Keelan Cole coming into the year and were quite surprised
to see him under drafted given the ability and skillset. The Jags have a receiving
unit that is beginning to believe they can accomplish great things, and we tend
to agree. Owned in 50% of leagues Cole will be a hit or miss addition as he
most likely is retained by another club at this point. We would like to see
more consistent production from Cole and Bortles before we can recommend a full
time starting role on your roster, but adding him is a definite must at this
point.
Chris
Godwin (TB)
With Desean Jackson looking like the man of old generating
incredible numbers in the first two weeks, Chris Godwin has lost some momentum
but still has relevance moving forward. Owned in 35% of leagues, Godwin is a
great option to stash on your bench as he carries good upside on a Bucs offense
that can’t do wrong to this point. While Chris will see decent target share on
a weekly basis, his true upside will become grand if an injury occurs to
Jackson or Evans. Now is the time to secure his services as a bench stash with flex
appeal.
John
Brown (BAL)
Admittedly we at ADF have never been huge supporters
of John Brown back with the Cardinals, but our opinion seems to be changing as
he looks healthy and beginning to become a favorite target of Joe Flacco. Brown
has put up good numbers in the first two weeks showing that great playmaking
ability that was sporadic in Arizona. Brown is available in 74% of leagues and
is a great bet to become a weekly flex option with higher matchup appeal. It’s
difficult to trust Joe Flacco, but the Ravens offense looks to have something
moving in the right direction.
Antonio
Callaway (CLE)
With the buzz surrounding Josh Gordon missing last week’s
contest and subsequently being traded to the New England Patriots, Antonio
Callaway received a firm jump on the Browns roster and should be on everyone’s
minds entering this wavier week. Callaway is a gifted player that held first
round NFL draft talent but lost traction due to off field concerns. Given the
opportunity last week to start, Callaway proved he was worth the price of admission
trying to leave his troubled past behind. Tyrod Taylor’s best attribute is
throwing the deep ball with great accuracy making Antonio a favorite of ours
moving forward. Callaway is virtually free to grab on all wires and we suggest
snagging him now.
Laquon
Treadwell (MIN)
We are forced to add Laquon Treadwell to this list to
help ease wide receiver needy rosters as the Vikings have a magical matchup
against the Buffalo Bills in week three. There is credence to this pickup even
without the great matchup as Minnesota is finally getting Treadwell involved as
the third receiver, and he’s starting to make plays happen. Treadwell does
however continue to have an issue with dropped passes, but if he cleans that
up, he is a prime candidate to see weaker coverage as an afterthought to
defenses thanks to Diggs, Thielen, and Rudolph. Deep leagues and desperate
teams shouldn’t overlook Treadwell this week while we feel a bench stash for
Laquon is definitely warranted already.
On the Radar:
Dede Westbrook (JAX)
Calvin Ridley (ATL)
Tavon Austin (DAL)
Anthony Miller (CHI)
DJ Moore (CAR)
Tight-Ends:
Will
Dissly (SEA)
We at ADF didn’t jump on board with the Seahawks Will Dissly
last week for being a top waiver addition, but after seeing him catch yet
another touchdown, he has jumped up our board. Still owned in only 31% of
leagues, Dissly should be there if you require a tight end that now has
touchdown upside on a Hawks team (that we mentioned before), would have extreme
garbage time appeal all season long. With the offensive line looking like Swiss
cheese leaving Wilson to run for his life, Dissly appears to be his safety
valve in troublesome situations. Dissly is becoming a viable starter but temper
the expectations.
Austin
Seferian-Jenkins (JAX)
The Jaguars Seferian-Jenkins was extremely high on the
ADF draft kit coming into the season, and he’s already proving his worth. So
long as the Jacksonville offense can continue to build off last week’s success,
ASJ should see a decent amount of targets moving forward with high redzone
upside. Owned in only 32% of leagues and knowing the tight end slot is one of
the hardest positions to garner production out of in fantasy football; Austin
could be a mainstay as the year goes on. If you require an upgrade, ASJ might
be the way to go.
Jesse
James (PIT)
Every season it seems that Jesse James is overlooked
and perhaps rightfully so, but somehow he turns out games that could propel you
to victory given the proper matchup. It’s difficult to see James as a weekly
starter, but once again he’s placed himself on the radar as a great matchup
play. Owned in 11% of leagues, James will undoubtedly be sitting on the wire
ripe for the picking and could show benefit if you have issues at tight end.
James touchdown upside has always been there, but the potential for extra PPR
points is now a reality.
