The Eagles:
Coming into this
contest the Eagles find themselves a slight Vegas underdog to the defending
Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Offensively, we all know the Eagles
lost Carson Wentz and are now relying on backup Nick Foles to carry this
Philadelphia club to their first Super Bowl title in franchise history. The
Eagles possess the 7th best offensive unit in the NFL with the 3rd
best rushing attack leading the way. Former Dolphin – Jay Ajayi will lead the
charge from the back field with running mate LeGarrette Blount looking for
revenge on his former team. These two backs have the potential to become a
nightmare for the Patriots defense all game long. If the Eagles can manage to
generate a lead, they will milk the clock and run their way to victory. No one
should sleep on the third back in this trio, rookie Corey Clement! Under Coach
Doug Pederson and Coordinator Frank Reich, Clement has carved out a nice role
for himself in the pass game, and in the red zone. There’s little to question the
Eagles will employ a proper running attack against a New England defense hard
pressed at times. Nick Foles shouldn’t be asked to become a game manager as he
is more than capable in creating pays and generating points to help this Eagles
team get a victory. Setting up the play action will be extremely important for
Foles, as Patriots Defensive Coordinator – Matt Patricia should bring the heat
in hopes to rattle the Eagles pivot. The Eagles offense against the Patriots
defense is where this game could be won and lost.
The Eagles defense
under Jim Schwartz has the difficult task of shutting down the G.O.A.T, Tom
Brady. Being able to generate pressure with simply the front four, will pay
dividends as the game wears on. Making Brady uncomfortable in the pocket should
be the goal for Philly this entire contest. It’s not imperative that they
generate a high number of sacks, but causing Tom to second guess his
progressions will be the best way to dominate on defense. Schwartz will have to
get creative in his blitz packages as Brady is the master at the quick release
generating chunk yards exposing the weakness from the added pressure. Staying
sound fundamentally will enhance the Eagles chances in slowing down Tom Brady.
The Patriots:
Tom Brady and the
Patriots chase history aiming to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers as the only teams
in the NFL to win SIX Lombardi Trophies. The Patriots come into this game
housing the best offensive unit in the league. Offensive Coordinator – Josh
McDaniels will undoubtedly look to lean on his running backs to take pressure
off Brady while gaining large amounts of yardage on exposed mismatches. Dion
Lewis and James White should be vocal points in the game plan especially in the
pass game, the screen pass could be seen a large number of times. Brady and the
Patriots have been in this situation so many times that nothing could faze them
in the spotlight. Brady will be focused on getting the ball out of his hands
quickly to disrupt any potential of the Eagles defensive line getting his
jersey dirty. If Brady can make enough plays on that front four, Jim Schwartz
will be forced to blitz and Brady will no doubt take advantage! New England
should have a difficult time running the ball on this stout front seven, but
will try and recreate the ground success over the middle with the pass. This
game could definitely resemble the 2015 AFC Championship, where the Broncos
were relentless in their pursuit of Brady. We shall see.
Defensively, New
England will come with the heat early and often as Defensive Coordinator – Matt
Patricia will trust his secondary to clutch and grab long enough to help create
those coverage sacks. The Patriots are near the bottom of the NFL in terms of
defensive ranking, as they sit ranked 29th in the league. Having
improved as the season wore on; the Pats do employ the best average points per
game (14PPG), on defense post week five. They will undoubtedly try and pressure
Nick Foles in hopes that he’ll generate turnovers on the confusing looks and
packages he sees. The biggest question mark on this defense is the line backing
core. The will be put to test all game through the run and keeping their
assignments in the many zone coverages Patricia likes to run. ADF fully expects
Gilmore and Butler to have superb games locking down whomever they are
covering. With that said, Stephon Gilmore if attacked with a great frequency
can be exposed as fatigue over takes his ability to make sound plays, might be
something to watch as the game moves on.
SUPER BOWL PICK:
With all the analysis and conversations that has been had all week, it’s
finally time to pick the Super Bowl 52 Champion!!! Tom Brady and the Patriots
have been in the big game many times and the platform doesn’t faze them, it’s considered
just another game. The Eagles are young and brash and have enough confidence to
carry them as they may not fully realize the magnitude of this game. With Vegas
pushing the spread to -4.5 it’s not difficult to envision this game being won
by a field goal thus killing the spread! ADF feels the Eagles should be able to
compete and may in fact come away with the victory. Either way, the Point
Spread for the Super Bowl won’t be covered even if the Patriots win this game. Bet
big on this one as the offseason begins on Monday! NE doesn’t cover the spread @ -4.5 PHI 41 NE 33 (W)
